It is my dream to help students in the journey of self-discovery so that they may find relevant learning in the classroom that will translate into confidence as young adults. I look for new and creative ways to engage students and I am intrigued by the variety of methods employed by other educators. Professional Learning Communities, peer relationships, community connections, and educational opportunities are excellent resources for myself as an educator. Ultimately, innovation, rigor, relevance, and relationships are the key to classroom success.
My ultimate goal for students is to reach a level of personal and educational growth based upon individual strengths and challenges; I want to make it a collaborative effort in concert with the teacher, the student and parents. The hope is to ignite a spark for learning and discovery that will carry over into the student’s world outside the classroom. As such, the success will be celebrated as a major accomplishment in the life of the student. All moments are to be affirmed positively to reinforce the student and encourage peer success in the classroom.
In order to accomplish this vision, I will embrace the concept of diverse approach and the process of thoughtfully adapting teaching methods according to the learner and classroom dynamic. The concept of ‘anything goes’ cannot exist in this vision; however, the knowledge that a variety of methods in unique combinations must exist is the foundation for student success in my teaching vision.
Students must leave my classroom prepared to excel as creative, collaborative individuals ready to think critically, and communicate effectively, as productive members of the 21st Century global community.
What makes this course interesting?
Strengthen the effectiveness of your writing through close reading and frequent practice at applying rhetorical strategies, analyzing information from source texts, and writing arguments
Become a critical reader of predominantly nonfiction works, including expository, argumentative, analytical, and personal texts from various authors and time periods
Keep an “assertion journal” in which given a quote, you will analyze and evaluate a writer’s assertion
Conduct research on a topic and then use that information to create your own argument or assertion about the topic
Participate in a roundtable discussion in which you’ll present research and examine key questions on an assigned topic

Learn about the elements that define effective argument and composition through the critical analysis and interpretation of complex texts.
Understand the interactions among a writer’s purpose, audience, subject, and genre and how each of these contributes to effective writing. Enhance your own writing skills and understand better each stage of the writing process as you develop expository, analytical, and argumentative compositions.
